Start with your situation. The alphabet can wait.

Medicare gets easier when you stop trying to memorize Parts A, B, C and D and start with the decisions that actually affect you: timing, doctors, prescriptions, travel, cost and how much flexibility you want.

Tell me where you are — turning 65, already on Medicare, still working — and I’ll tell you which decisions actually matter for you.

Already on Medicare? Open Enrollment runs October 15 – December 7. If a letter about your 2027 plan came in the mail, start here:

Turning 65? Your first decisions have their own timing.

There are two main ways to receive your Medicare health coverage.

Neither path is automatically “better.” The right comparison depends on the life you actually live.

Original Medicare

Medicare Parts A and B provide your hospital and medical coverage directly through the federal program.

  • Broad access to providers that accept Medicare.
  • Usually paired with a separate Part D prescription plan.
  • Many people add Medigap to reduce some of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind.
How Medigap works

Medicare Advantage

A private Medicare-approved plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits, usually with prescription coverage and often with additional benefits.

  • Provider networks and plan rules matter.
  • Costs are often structured differently from Original Medicare plus Medigap.
  • Available plans and benefits vary by location and can change from year to year.
What’s changing for 2027

These questions matter more than memorizing plan names.

They are also the reason a one-size-fits-all recommendation is a bad idea.

Where are you in the Medicare timeline?
Turning 65, already enrolled, working past 65, retiree coverage and COBRA can create different decisions and deadlines.
How important is keeping specific doctors?
Provider access can be one of the biggest practical differences between coverage paths.
What prescriptions do you depend on?
Drug coverage, formularies and pharmacy rules can materially change the fit of a plan.
Do you value low monthly cost or greater predictability?
There is often a tradeoff between what you pay every month and what you may pay when you use care.
How much do you travel or live away from home?
Network flexibility can matter much more to someone who travels frequently or lives in more than one place.
What problem are you actually trying to solve?
Choosing coverage is different from fixing a current problem, responding to a plan change or understanding whether you need to act at all.

Mom made Medicare make sense.

The clearest Medicare lesson Roderick ever got came from his mother, at her kitchen table, while he was studying for his license. Read that story.
